A VHDL Primer by Jayaram Bhaskar

Description:

VHDL is an IEEE standard as well as an ANSI standard language for describing digital designs--but it is a large and verbose language with many complex constructs that have complex semantic meaning, and is difficult to understand initially. (VDHL is often quoted as an acronym for Very Hard Description Language!) This primer--updated to include the new standard just released by the IEEE (IEEE Std 1076-1993)--uses a subset of the language to introduce VDHL to readers at the beginner's level. It explains the complex constructs of the language using an example-based approach.

Covers topics such as basic language elements, behavioral modeling, dataflow modeling, structural modeling, generics and configurations, subprograms and overloading, packages and libraries, advanced features, model simulation, and hardware modeling examples. For both hardware and software designers interested in learning VHDL. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

An up-to-the-minute introduction to VHDL focusing on the features you need to get results. Includes extensive practical examples so you can start writing VHDL model immediately.

VHDL is a hardware description language that can be used to model a digital system at many levels of abstraction. Its powerful features enable modeling designs with high degrees of complexity.

A VHDL Primer aims at introducing the VHDL language to the readers in a user-friendly, readable style, concentrating only on the most useful aspects of this language. It is contemporary and up-to-date as it incorporates the popular and widely used IEEE standard package. It is a must-have book for any one who wants to leverage the remarkable power of VHDL, and will help one master key VHDL techniques such a behavioral, dataflow and structural modeling, generics and configurations, subprograms and overloading, packages and libraries, model simulation, Advanced features include: entity statements, generate statements, aliases, guarded signals, attributes, and aggregate targets.

SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS A.V.OPPENHEIM AND A.S.WILLSKY PDF

Signals and Systems by A.V.Oppenheim And A.S.Willsky

Signals and Systems by  A.V.Oppenheim And  A.S.Willsky

Description: This comprehensive book of signals and systems develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts/methods. Highly regarded for its intellectual quality, it provides a solid foundation and life-long reference for anyone studying the most important methods or modern signal and system analysis.

The second edition of this well-known and highly regarded text can be used as the basis for a one- or two-semester undergraduate course in signals and linear systems theory and applications. Topics include basic signals and systems concepts, linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, Fourier representations of continuous-time and discrete-time signals, the CT and DT Fourier transforms, and time- and frequency-domain analysis methods. The author emphasizes applications of the theory through numerous examples in filtering, sampling, communications, and feedback.

The parallel development of continuous-time and discrete-time frequency domain methods allows the reader to apply insights and intuition across the two domains. It also facilitates a deeper understanding of the material by bringing into focus the similarities and differences between the two domains. The text also includes introductory chapters on communication systems and control theory.

This book assumes that you have a background in calculus as well as exposure to complex numbers and elementary differential equations. Because of its thoroughness and unhurried pace, this text is highly recommended for students and those interested in self-study.

This comprehensive exploration of signals and systems develops continuous- time and discrete-time concepts/methods in "parallel" -- highlighting the similarities and differences -- and features introductory treatments of the applications of these basic methods in such areas as filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. Relatively self-contained, the book assumes no prior experience with system analysis, convolution, Fourier analysis, or Laplace and z-transforms.

FEATURES:

  • Develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel -- highlighting the similarities and differences. E.g.:
    • Ch. 1 on basic signals and system properties, Ch. 2 on linear time-invariant systems, and Ch. 3 on Fourier series representation each develop the continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel.
    • Ch. 9 on the Laplace Transform and Ch. 10 on the Z-transform deal with the two domains separately, but often draw parallels between results in the two domains.
  • Introduces some of the important uses of the basic methods that are developed -- e.g., filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback.
  • NEW--A companion book contains MATLAB-based computer exercises for each topic.
  • NEW--Material on Fourier analysis has been reorganized significantly to provide an easier path for the reader to master and appreciate the importance of this topic. Now represented in four chapters, each of which is far more streamlined and focused, introducing a smaller and more cohesive set of topics.
  • NEW--Frequency-domain filtering isintroduced very early in the development to provide a central and concrete illustration of why this topic is important and to provide some intuition with a minimal amount of mathematical preliminaries.
  • NEW--Relocates coverage of Sampling before Communication. * Allows for discussion of important forms of communication, namely those involving discrete or digital signals, in which sampling concepts are intimately involved.
  • NEW--Chapter-end Problems
  • They provide a better balance between exercises developing basic skills and understanding ones that pursue more advanced problem-solving skills. The new edition organizes chapter-end problems into four types of sections which makes it easier for the reader to locate the problems that will best serve their purposes; and provides two types of basic problems, ones with answers (but not solutions); and ones with solutions to provide immediate feedback, while attempting to master the material.
  • The four types of chapter-end problems are--
    • Basic Problems with Answers.
    • Basic Problems.
    • Advanced Problems.
    • Extension Problems.

802.11 WIRELESS NETWORKS MATTEW S. GAST

802.11 Wireless Networks The Definitive Guide Oreilly Excellent

Title: 802.11 Wireless Networks The Definitive Guide Oreilly Excellent by Matthew S. Gast

802.11 Wireless Networks Matthew Gast Description: Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide aims to codify the body of knowledge needed to design and maintain wireless local area networks (LANs). The authors succeed admirably in this, covering what installation and administration teams need to know and digging into information of use to driver writers and others working at lower levels.

The only significant detail that's been excluded has to do with security--a notorious weak point of 802.11x LANs. The authors cover the feeble but widely used Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) authentication protocol in detail and devote another whole chapter to 802.1x, which is an emerging authentication scheme based on Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). The author has considerable skill in communicating information graphically and does a great job of using graphs to show how communications frequencies shift over time and how conversations among access points and network nodes progress over time. This is indeed an authoritative document. --David Wall

Topics covered: How IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networks (also known as WiFi networks) work, and how to configure your own. The framing specification is covered well, as are authentication protocols and (in detail) the physical phenomena that affect IEEE 802.11x radio transmissions. There's advice on how to design a wireless network topology, and how to go about network traffic analysis and performance improvement.

COMPUTER ORGANIZATION AND DESIGN DAVID A. PATTERSON JOHN L.HENNESSY PDF

>> Apr 5, 2010

Computer Organization And Design by David A. Patterson And John L.Hennessy

Title: Computer Organization And Design The Hardware/Software Interface by David A. Patterson : The Hardware/Software Interface (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design)

Computer Organization And Design Description: This textbook provides a basic introduction to the fundamentals of current computer designs. As the title suggests, the text skirts the border between hardware and software. After an overview of the subject and a discussion of performance, the book launches into technical matter such as instruction sets, how they are constrained by the underlying processor hardware, the constraints on their design, and more. An excellent critique of computer arithmetic methods leads to a high-level discussion on processor design.
Following is a great introduction to pipelining, nice coverage of memory issues, and solid attention to peripherals. The book concludes with a brief discussion of the additional issues inherent in multiprocessing machines. The extremely lucid description is grounded in real-world examples. Interesting exercises help reinforce the material, and each section contains a write-up of the historical background of each idea. Computer Organization and Design is accessible to the beginner, but also offers plenty of valuable knowledge for experienced engineers.

Review

"The choice of 'Real Stuff' is judicious. The 'Computers in the Real World' sections are interesting to read and should widen the horizons of the too often too tech-oriented Sophomores and Juniors. On the whole this is a very solid book and the success of the third edition is assured as has been the success of its two predecessors."
-Jean-Loup Baer, University of Washington

"I am very impressed with the new sections 'Computers in the Real World.' It is very interesting and speaks to the students who would like to feel a connection between classroom materials and real-world applications. I am very pleased with the manuscript for the third edition. This revision is well-updated and a comprehensive introduction to the hardware and software fundamentals."
-David Brooks, Harvard University

"The logical development and explanations and examples were always great to begin with. The 'Historical Perspectives' have become even better-- they are part of the book that I enjoy most."
